Motivation - Employee Relations
Some of the most effective ways for managers to provide
employee motivation include giving praises, recognition,
and positive feedback, passing on feedback from more senior
managers, and letting other employees know which employees
has been responsible for excellent work and or effort. All
too often, employees experience "management mistakes",
where most of the feedback/mistakes are unjustly directed
towards the wrong employees.
Employee motivation is very important for business success.
It may not be obvious to most managers, however the most
important asset to a company or business is its" employees.
Keeping employee motivation up is always rewarding to a business.
Employee motivation should be
a high priority
Motivated employees are more productive and higher productivity
usually means higher profits.
In a service industry, employees who are highly motivated
will provide more quality customer service keeping the customer
happy is always a positive for business.
The level of employee motivation can be gauge by the volume
of staff turn over during a certain period. Employees who
are well motivated are more likely to stay with the company.
They grow in experience and become even more valuable to
their employer and the company.
If employee motivation issues are addressed and acknowledged
the cost of recruiting and training new staff is reduced
and more time can be focused on growing the business.
Non Financial Employee Motivation
Generally, employees work to satisfy needs of one kind.
Non financial motivators are thins other than money that
motivate employees to work. There are five main levels of
needs that influence a employees motivation and behavior.
- The need for food, drink and shelter
- Safety needs, protection against danger, threat, deprivation
- Social needs, the need for belonging, acceptance, family
and friendship
- Self esteem, reputation, status
- Self-actualization, the need for realization of one"s
own potential for continual self-development.
If employees feel that their decisions are generally supported,
and when genuine mistakes are made they will be guided in
the right direction; they will be more positive, confident,
motivated and prepared to take on responsibility and decision-making.
When employees are shown clear expectations and when they
are valued, trusted, encouraged and motivated; they will
be more likely to give of their best.
Financial Employee Motivation
Money, cash incentive and the way it is paid can positively
effect employee motivation.
Paying extra money for jobs with difficult hour will usually
motivate and encourage potential employees to apply for work.
A loyalty bonus can be used to persuade workers to stay
with their employer for a long period of time. Employees
may not want to work longer that their contracted hours but
they can often be persuaded to do so by receiving a higher
rate of pay.
A perk is a payment kind. Instead of giving money, the employer
might provide the following: Cars, Health Insurance, training
and education, free uniform, discount products, first class
travel.
It is usually cheaper for the employer to provide goods
rather than the money to buy them with. This not only provides
employee motivation but can also provide some tax benefits
as well. A good perk will contribute to employee motivation
and also make an employee reluctant to leave the business.
