Interview Attire
Personal Appearance during an Interview
First impressions count. Your personal appearance is of
great importance to the job interview process. The image
that you present through you personal appearance creates
an impression in the mind of the interviewer. Dress, grooming,
and hygiene determine your personal appearance and effectively
would have an influence on the outcome of the interview.
What to Wear during an Interview
Putting in the extra effort in determining what to wear at an interview
is always beneficial. It is also worth while getting someone else’s
opinion. The phrase “dress for success” means that you project
a professional and positive image by wearing appropriate attire to the
job interview. Regardless of you career field, appropriate interview
attire are generally conservative, understated, and business-like. Wear
clothing that is consistent with and will appeal to the culture is what
can best be described as appropriate corporate attire. How you dress
for the interview will depend to some extent on the job for which you
are applying. Dress on step above what you would actually wear on the
job. You should be careful as to not under dress or overdress for an
interview. Generally, wedding of prom attire is considered too dressy.
Interview attire should always be impeccably crisp, cleaned, pressed,
and in good condition. Appropriate corporate attire should be made of
good quality fabrics. Expensive brand name outfits could prove to be
a worth while investment for corporate attire.
Suitable Attire for Job Interviews
Both men and woman should choose a simple, conservative business suit
for the job interview. Woman in certain career fields (education, social
work, and human services) may elect to wear tailored dress at the job
interview. Good suit colors for man and woman are navy, gray, charcoal,
or black. Also Taupe or pewter shades for woman. Favor a classic rather
than a trendy look. Avoid sporty, cute, or casual looks. Solid dark colors
are usually better than prints. Avoid pastel, bold, or bright colors.
Muted plaids or pin stripes are acceptable. Skirts that reach the bottom
of the knee or longer are appropriate for the job interview.
