Artist
Artists create visual and three-dimensional forms through
painting, drawing, printmaking, carving, sculpting,
photography, modelling, video and computers to communicate an
impression or idea.
Artists may concentrate on a specific area of work or may
use a combination of these techniques. They may specialise as
an:
Artist (Fine/Visual Arts) who may perform the
following tasks:
- conceives and develops ideas for paintings, drawings,
designs or installations
- chooses a subject and decides how to approach it
- selects a medium such as oils, watercolours, pencil,
pastels, acrylic or inks
- prepares grounds such as canvas, paper or board
- mixes or applies colours to the surface using
appropriate techniques and taking into account the
relationships of line, colour, design and form
- produces design work or illustrations for publications
- runs workshops and/or oversees community arts projects.
Cartoonist who may perform the following tasks:
- conceives and develops ideas for cartoons, using
illustrations and words (if appropriate)
- prepares rough or finished drawings
- submits designs to editors for approval
- prepares notes and instructions for finishing and layout
- supervises final layout and suggests improvements
- supervises photography of artwork.
Printmaker who may perform the following tasks:
- etches designs onto metal plates, using acid to produce
prints
- prepares the printmaking and ink surfaces, and transfers
the image to print material
- cuts designs into wood or lino, prepares the screens for
screen printing and executes the lithographs.
Sculptor who may perform the following tasks:
- conceives and develops a design for sculpture
- decides on the material and techniques to be used and
selects materials of suitable proportions, quality and
texture
- sketches designs or makes models of wax or plaster
- carves, models or assembles materials to the desired
form, using hand or power tools
- fires clay objects in kilns
- prepares moulds for casting sculptures in metal.
Artists work in studios. They may share rented space with
other artists. They may sell their work to or through art
galleries.
