Bank Officer

Bank officers (including building society and credit union officers) receive and pay out money and assist customers with loans, foreign currency and investments.

Bank officers are usually rotated to different positions during their careers to broaden their experience and develop their skills. They may specialise in areas such as export financing, international banking, superannuation, personnel administration, law, economics, accountancy, corporate and commercial lending, public relations, advertising or information systems.

Depending on their position, bank officers may perform the following tasks.

Customer Service Officer/Teller

  • receives and answers customer enquiries
  • opens new accounts
  • promotes bank products and services
  • identifies customer needs and refers them to appropriate banking services
  • receives deposits, issues receipts and pays out withdrawals
  • enters details in customers' accounts
  • records transactions
  • balances the cash, orders notes and coins
  • issues bank cheques.

International/Overseas Officer

  • deals with international finance enquiries and transactions for customers, including documentation for importing and exporting
  • conducts foreign currency transactions for overseas travellers.

Lending Officer (Credit/Loans Officer)

  • assesses the viability and credit risk of business and consumer loan proposals
  • promotes bank products and services
  • examines, evaluates and processes applications for credit or loans and, in a commercial enterprise, controls and processes accounts.

Operations/Accounts Officer

  • performs clerical duties such as opening and sorting mail
  • files correspondence and documents
  • records items (e.g. cheques) paid in to and cashed by the tellers
  • processes and updates daily transactions
  • maintains and supervises accounting procedures
  • examines all cheques and other vouchers to ensure that signatures and other details are in order
  • answers customers' enquiries regarding their accounts
  • makes sure that accounts are conducted correctly
  • controls 'authority to operate' on accounts and looks after regular payments for customers.

Telephone Consultant

  • assists customers with banking requirements over the telephone
  • promotes bank products and services
  • assists customers with loan applications.

Most bank employees work in a branch network where customers are mainly individuals and local businesses. Bank officers can request transfers to work in other branches and departments.
