Clothing and Soft Furnishing Production Worker

Clothing and soft furnishing production workers are involved in all stages of production, from marking and cutting the fabric through to finishing the item.

Clothing and soft furnishing production workers may specialise as a:

Cutter who may perform the following tasks:

  • arranges patterns for garments on a piece of cloth or marker paper, taking into account the direction of the weave, imperfections and shade of the cloth, and making sure that no material is wasted
  • marks around the master pattern on the piece of cloth or marker paper
  • positions the marked cloth or marker paper on top of multiple layers of cloth
  • cuts the cloth using shears, a hand-held electric cutter or computer-assisted cutting equipment
  • marks the position of features such as darts, pleats, tucks and pockets
  • bundles the cut work for makers.

Material Handler who may perform the following tasks:

  • checks that parts of garments are sorted according to style, size and colour before they go to the machinists to be sewn up
  • checks garment parts against contract numbers
  • stacks garment parts and matches them with trimmings such as buttons and braid
  • supplies machinists with work.

Product Examiner who may perform the following tasks:

  • checks products for faults both during and after manufacture
  • sends faulty products to other sections of the factory for repair
  • checks sizes against tickets or labels and cuts off loose threads.

Sewing Machinist who may perform the following tasks:

  • operates sewing machines and guides material under needles, following edges, seams or markings
  • assembles pieces using various sewing techniques such as hemming and pleating
  • attaches zippers, pockets and buttons using specialised techniques, and adjusts needles and thread according to thickness of material
  • examines sections of finished articles for defects, and cuts off excess material and threads
  • assembles pieces or sews the whole product, and finishes items by pressing and fitting, and prepares them for hanging if required
  • carries out basic maintenance of hand tools and machines.

Soft Furnishing Maker who makes curtains and also takes measurements, provides cost estimates, and fits tracks and curtains on site.

With experience and sometimes further training, it is possible for a clothing and soft furnishing production worker to become a

Production Supervisor or Manager who may perform the following tasks:

  • supervises cutting, construction or pressing and finishing of clothing and soft furnishing items
  • maintains quality and quantity in the day-to-day operation of the factory
  • organises the work of other clothing and soft furnishing production workers to make sure that quotas are met
  • develops and/or works from a production schedule, and keeps records of daily production.

Clothing and soft furnishing production workers can work in factories or at home using a range of specialist machines. They may be employed on a full-time, part-time or casual basis.
