Council Worker Outdoor
Outdoor council workers are employed by local government
bodies to construct and maintain roads, footpaths, gutters,
flood controls, fire controls, drainage, sewerage,
water-mains, parks and gardens, and to dispose of rubbish.
Outdoor council workers may perform the following tasks:
- prepare foundations for new roads
- lay and level surface material
- prepare sites for new operational works
- put up safety signs and direct traffic through the
construction area
- construct footpaths, lay paving stones or bricks and lay
new kerbs
- dig trenches for drainpipes and lay pipes accurately
into position, backfill and compact trenches and replace
disturbed surfaces
- measure and work out roadworks materials
- unblock water, stormwater and sewerage pipes
- construct and maintain water reticulation services
- construct and maintain sewerage collection systems
- maintain and tidy parks, gardens, nature strips and road
edges, which involves general garden maintenance, removing
weeds, pruning and tree planting
- maintain roads, pavements and bridges
- assist with garbage disposal and collection
- drive trucks and operate equipment such as mowers,
backhoes, graders, loaders and rollers.
Protective clothing must be worn.
With experience and sometimes further training it is
possible to become a
Works Supervisor - Local Government who manages
groups of workers in construction and maintenance works, and
may perform the following tasks:
- supervise outdoor work groups, make sure safe work
practices are followed and appropriate on-the-job training
is given
- supervise works projects
- make sure that the council's machinery is maintained,
correctly operated and meets all safety standards
- perform simple field surveys and set out site works as
required
- maintain inventory, stock control books, time sheets and
order books
- arrange raw materials for daily use on construction and
maintenance projects
- monitor and finalise works projects.
