Dental Hygienist
Dental hygienists are employed to provide preventive, educational and
therapeutic methods for controlling oral diseases. Dental hygienists help
individual patients and groups achieve and maintain oral
health by educating them or proper dental care and hygiene.
Dental hygienists may be responsible for the following tasks:
- Dental hygienists will educate and counsel children and adults on dental
health, brushing techniques, plaque control, oral hygiene and nutrition
- Dental hygienists will remove deposits and stains from teeth by scaling and
root planning and cleaning
- give local anesthetic before a dental procedure
- assist in the prevention and control of dental decay and gum disease
- choose and use appropriate fluoride and dental treatments and
polish tooth restorations
- expose and process dental X-rays for dental assessment
- make impressions of patients' mouths for the
construction of study casts and mouth guards for sporting individuals
- select and custom fit orthodontic bands (braces), and remove
orthodontic wires and attachments where required
- apply, maintain and remove periodontal packs
- instruct patients on how to look after the teeth and
mouth after surgical operations
- management and control of periodontal disease
- Dental hygienists may perform preventative dental procedures including
applying sealants to 'fissures' (or cracks).
Dental hygienists may work in a team led by a practicing
dentist and eventually move on to become a dentist themselves.
