Dentists diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and abnormalities of teeth and gums, undertake preventive procedures, conduct surgery and perform other specialist techniques.

A dentist may perform the following tasks:

  • examine patients' teeth and gums using dental equipment and X-rays
  • diagnose dental conditions and plan oral health care in consultation with patients
  • clean teeth and cavities and provide preventive care
  • repair decayed and broken teeth by placement of various filling materials and when necessary, extract and replace teeth
  • treat diseases of the gums, tooth nerves and root canals
  • perform surgical operations to the mouth, jaws, teeth and related structures
  • give local and general anaesthetics when necessary for carrying out treatment
  • design, construct and fit dentures, crowns and bridges for the replacement of lost or unsound teeth
  • refer patients to dental specialists for further treatment.

After completion of the dental degree, graduates may undertake further study and/or with experience specialise as an:

Endodontist who diagnoses, treats and helps to prevent diseases of the root canal and its surrounding tissues.

Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon who surgically treats diseases and abnormalities of the teeth and mouth and surgically treats and manages craniofacial problems.

Orthodontist who realigns the natural teeth for functional and cosmetic reasons.

Paediatric Dentist who deals with child dental health.

Periodontist who treats diseases of the gums and supporting tissues.

Prosthodontist who undertakes the advanced restorative treatment of teeth and surrounding tissues by artificial means such as crowns, bridges and dentures.
