Editor
Editors read and correct written material for publication,
decide on the editorial policy and the content of publications
or news items, and/or manage the production of publications
and the staff involved, depending on the position they hold.
Editors may specialise as an:
Associate Editor who directs the preparation of a
section of a newspaper, magazine or other non-book
publication, and may perform the following tasks:
- assigns reporting staff and photographers to obtain
coverage of matters of news or interest
- hires casual staff and approves staff leave and expenses
- reviews and edits copy to make sure that it follows the
required style and format, and writes headlines
- prepares news, feature articles and critical reviews,
and plans the layout of the publication
- directs the preparation of a publication section or a
television or radio segment.
Associate editors may specialise as news editors directing
the gathering, selecting and editing of news for newspapers,
news agencies, television or radio news reports, or public
affairs programs. Sometimes they work outdoors gathering
information.
Book Editor who is sometimes called a copy editor.
A book editor prepares manuscripts of books for publication
and may perform the following tasks:
- edits written material, either on hard copy or on
computers, to make sure that it is consistent in style,
punctuation and content
- suggests structural and style changes to manuscripts
- prepares manuscripts for publication, checks the
artwork, indexes and tables, writes short comments, captions
and promotional briefs, and maintains publication schedules
- proofreads manuscripts
- communicates with the production department which
organises the design, typesetting and printing of books.
Chief Sub-editor who constantly monitors the pages
of a publication and sorts through the articles to decide on
those that will be included.
Senior Sub-editor who writes headlines to fit the
space allocated to a story or copy, decides on layout of
photographs and drawings, contributes to the design of the
publication and generates new ideas. It is advantageous for
senior sub-editors to have knowledge of computer-design
applications.
Sub-editor who works for editors of magazines and
newspapers in assessing the suitability of reports and
articles for publication, and edits as necessary. They may
arrange the production of photographs or illustrations and
liaise with printing compositors to achieve the desired
effect.
Required Skills - Editor
- highly literate, with a sound knowledge of English
grammar

- able to produce detailed and accurate work, often to
tight deadlines
- good management and leadership skills
- aptitude for using computers
