Electrical Engineering Technician

Electrical engineering technicians carry out technical
support functions in electrical engineering including the
diagnosis and repair of faults and the selection and
installation of equipment.
Electrical engineering technicians may work under the
direction of electrical engineers, technologists and
associates in all stages of planning, design, maintenance and
production.
Electrical engineering technicians may perform the
following tasks:
- assist electrical engineers, electrical engineering
technologists and electrical engineering associates in
field, workshop and office activities, such as circuit
design and layout, and arrangement of power stations,
switchyards, substations, switchgear and cabling systems
- look after and test equipment, and construct prototypes
and final assemblies
- undertake complex electrical workshop functions, such as
assemblies for protection relays, metering and indicating
devices
- having an appropriate licence, assemble, install, test
and calibrate electrical installations to conform with
regulations and safety requirements
- supervise other technicians, drafters and tradespeople.
With experience and sometimes further study, it is possible
to become an electrical engineering associate, a technologist
or professional (registered/fully qualified) engineer.
Electrical engineering technicians work in offices,
technical laboratories or workshops, and also do on-site work.
They usually work as team members with engineers,
technologists, engineering associates and tradespeople.
Electrical engineering technicians may specialise as
electrical engineering detail drafters or instrument
technicians, power station technicians, control systems
technicians or test technicians.
