Electrotechnology assemblers apply electrical knowledge to make, fit or repair electrical machines, instruments or appliances.

Electrotechnology assemblers may perform the following tasks:

  • install electrical and electronic control systems
  • assemble electrical and electronic components and appliances
  • connect electrical equipment to power supplies
  • maintain automated production processes.

Electrotechnology assemblers may decide what parts and materials are needed for the job; make, alter and assemble metal parts; select and cut wires or cables; connect wires or cables to terminals or connectors according to wiring diagrams; operate and maintain machine tools such as lathes, drilling machines, welding and heating equipment, and hoists.

Electrotechnology assemblers may specialise as switchboard builders, armature winders who wind or rewind electrical motors and generators, or electrical instrument fitters who test, repair and maintain electrical measuring equipment used in industry.

With experience and possibly some business training, electrotechnology assemblers may specialise as electrical contractors, who order materials, organise staff to meet customer needs and carry out other tasks associated with running a business.

Electrotechnology assemblers may work in workshops, in private homes or in manufacturers' factories. They may have a considerable amount of contact with the public. They may work in confined spaces and have to stand for long periods. They may also be required to work at heights on masts, towers and roofs.

Electrotechnology assemblers must be aware of safety regulations and must often wear and use supplied protective equipment to minimise associated risks.
