Engraver

Engravers cut letters, figures and designs on metal, glass, wood, rubber, plastic and other surfaces.

Engravers may perform a variety of tasks depending on their area of specialisation:

Hand Engraver and

Jewellery Engraver who may perform the following tasks:

  • engrave many different types of objects including silverware, jewellery, plates, glass, glassware and trophies according to sketches, diagrams, photographs or sample workpieces
  • work from original sketches and blueprints or reproduce existing patterns, reducing or enlarging these according to the size of the article to be engraved
  • mark or inscribe layout lines on the workpiece, position the workpiece in a vice and cut the design onto its surface
  • use an acid corrosion process to produce plates for printing
  • clean and polish the engraved area.

Industrial/Architectural Engraver and

Sign-Making Engraver who may perform the following tasks:

  • engrave objects using a pantograph machine, which has an electric needle or cutter that inscribes the design from a template
  • operate computer-aided engraving machines and mechanically-operated machines.

The use of computerised machinery has greatly increased the capacity of engravers to produce a wide variety of specialised work.

Engravers usually work in the retail or manufacturing industries.
