Exporter and Importer

Exporters and importers sell and buy goods, such as raw materials, clothing, food products and manufactured goods, produced locally or produced overseas.

Exporters and importers may be responsible for the the following tasks:

  • supervise and coordinate the marketing decisions and activities of overseas distributors or agents and help in administrative, sales and marketing duties
  • investigate, understand and assess overseas supply and demand for goods they produced, or understand the local demand for goods produced overseas
  • research and adhere with legal responsibilites affecting export and import of goods to and from the countries of interest
  • discuss and arrange orders for the purpose of production of goods with suppliers and distributors/agents
  • arrange and manage the shipment of goods and ensure that all customs requirements and procedures and are adhered to
  • arrange payment upon receipt of goods, making sure these payments meet financial regulations in the country of interest
  • communicate with freight forwarders and customs brokers, who make freight and space bookings arrangements with airline or shipping companies and arrange for the movement of cargo from airports and wharves
  • monitor the performance of the business and prepare financial statements and other financial metters and report on export-import operations.

An exporter/importer may specialise as an:

Export/Import (Administration) Manager who is usually based in the company's head office. The main role is the supervision of the receipt, managing, recording and progress of export/import orders through the company in an efficient manner. This involves communicating with company departments, customers and outside organisations.

Export/Import (Distribution) Manager who coordinates the movement of goods both in and out, responsible for ensuring compliance with customs barrier control matters, and negotiates the freight rates and delivery schedules times.

Export/Import (Sales/Marketing) Manager who travels overseas to obtain orders or source supplies that are in local demand from overseas customers, attends tradeshows, seminars and exhibitions, and demonstrates products or acquires product knowledge overseas.

  • being able to speak one or more foreign languages is highly advantageous (a considerable amount of travelling overseas may be required)
