Fashion Designer

Fashion designers design and develop new styles and products for clothing apparel and accessories. Their duties involves creating original designs, or by adapting existing fashions to suit current/local conditions and trends. They may also perform cutting and machining sample garments based on these designs.

Fashion designers may perform the following tasks:

  • Design and illustrate concepts by producing storyboard and specification drawings
  • use computer software to manipulate and develop patterns and modify clothing and or accessories designs
  • research and develop fabrics, different shades, colors and accessories for production of garments
  • make or design patterns, or work closely with patternmakers, to draft unique patterns from sketches or specification drawings
  • pick and choose stylish fabric, colour and trim, and undertake cutting and machining of sample garments to enhance the style
  • design and fit samples and discuss them with senior management, sales and manufacturing staff, and contribute to time and costing estimates
  • finalise style specification sheets with detailed unique sketches and trim details to conform to the latest trends
  • test and approve final samples before they go into production
  • supervise staff and provide quality assurance
  • be involved in meetings and liaise with production staff during mass production of garments, and participate in testing and quality control
  • may have the opportunity to travel overseas to gain information and further insight on current fashion trends and what other people are wearing overseas.
  • research and understand the clothing markets and also control merchandising and retailing of new clothing and garments.

Fashion designers may set up their own business and work individually or as part of a large corporation.
