Florist

Florists must be good at arranging and displaying flowers as well as marketing flowers and floral products depending on the customer's requirements. Florists prepare flowers and floral arrangements such as bouquets, sprays, wreaths or vases of flowers and flower accessories. They also organise the storage, sale and personal delivery of floral arrangements.

Florists may also work by contracts to supply flowers to corporate customers or for large-scale events, such as shopping centres, hotels, sporting events, conferences, weddings, funerals etc.

Becoming a florist does not require the completion of secondary education, however part-time study such as a Certificate III or IV, and on-the-job training, may be required.

Florists may perform the following tasks:

  • design appropriate floral arrangements based on discussions with customers about their requirements and needs, including type of occasion and budget available and time of delivery
  • select and handle flowers and greenery, taking into account the expected life of each flower, and trim flowers to a suitable length, strengthening them with wire if necessary
  • arrange flowers and greenery in vases or secure them to a wire or plastic base, and possibly finishing the arrangement with bows and ribbons or other trimmings
  • make sure that flowers are fed and remain in good condition taking into account the temperature, weather, watering requirements and storage needs
  • arrange local delivery of pre-purchased flowers and relay interstate and overseas orders
  • arrange paper, silk or latex flowers and fruits and other materials
  • decorate receptions, churches and halls for weddings and other special occasions, parties etc
  • take part in the day to day management and administration, such as working out costs of floral arrangements, maintaining financial records and supervising staff

Florists may need to attend flower markets early in the morning when the flowers are ready to be cut. They have a very high level of communications with the public.
