Furniture Removalist

Being a furniture removalist generally requires no specific education for entry. Practical skills are often more important than level of education.

Furniture removalists may start their career as a Furniture Removalist Offsider who drives in the truck alongside a furniture removalist and who performs furniture removal duties, but not at an advanced level.

Furniture removalists move domestic or commercial furniture between different locations both within the state or territory and nationwide.

Furniture removalists may perform the following tasks:

  • make sure the load is correctly placed and secured to avoid any damage to the truck or to the goods
  • use pads and hessians to make sure items such as fridges, couches and beds are not damaged
  • drive defensively and handle dangerous road conditions
  • load goods onto the truck either by hand, or by using a forklift, trolleys, lifting straps or lifting hooks
  • conduct a general maintenance check of the truck and clean the vehicle
  • inspect the house or office at the pick-up address to see what has to be moved, then pack and label items
  • check items against inventory of larger furniture, noting any wear and tear or damage.
  • estimate weights to comply with load limitations, and ensure safe distribution of weight.

Furniture removalists may be required to work long hours and be away from home for extended periods, especially for country and interstate removals.
