Gaming workers provide gamblers with gaming services in
casinos and other gambling establishments.
A gaming worker may perform the following tasks:
- keep a check on cash given to cashiers and on
transactions of gaming tokens called 'chips'
- keep an eye open for aggressive behaviour and settle
disputes arising at gaming tables
- check gaming equipment and make sure it is in good
condition
- report any missing or damaged equipment.
Gaming workers perform a variety of tasks depending on
their area of specialisation.
Croupier may perform the following tasks:
- shuffle and deal cards
- spin roulette wheels, money wheels or mini dice cage
- explain and interpret the rules of games to customers
- announce and pay winning bets and collect losing bets
- sell gaming tokens at the gaming tables to customers.
Gaming Inspector (Casino) may perform the following
tasks:
- supervising gaming table activities
- supervising staff such as croupiers.
Gaming Inspector (Government) may perform the
following tasks:
- report incidents involving illegal activity by casino
employees or patrons and where necessary attend court to
give evidence
- check financial figures, statistics and taxation
requirements of the casino
- conduct regular checks and pre-licensing inspections of
hotels and clubs.
Gaming Machine Worker may perform the following
tasks:
- clear money or gaming tokens from a gaming machine
- process Keno tickets, call and verify results of Keno
draws
- fill hoppers with money or gaming tokens
- clear jammed money or gaming tokens from a gaming
machine
- replace a light globe or fuse within a gaming machine
cabinet
- issue or take back gaming tokens
- pay out winnings.
With experience and sometimes further training, it is
possible to become a Gaming Table Supervisor or a Gaming Pit
Boss.
A gaming worker is required to do shift work, including
nights, weekends and public holidays. They may also be
required to stand for long periods of time. Age limits apply
because licensing laws prohibit people under the age of 18
years from working on the gaming floor. Uniforms may be
provided.
