Guidance Officer

Guidance officers assist students to develop their
personal, social, educational and career planning skills.
A guidance officer may perform the following tasks:
- plan interventions to overcome or prevent learning and
behavioural problems
- counsel students and their parents on problems such as
educational or career path options, truancy, misbehaviour
and relationships
- consult with principals, teachers and other staff,
including officers from other agencies and medical
practitioners
- prepare reports and maintain records on students with
special needs
- develop education and training programs
- provide an information and referral service on education
and training opportunities
- undertake research in areas relevant to their
professional roles.
Guidance officers may deliver a support service to school
principals, teachers, students and families, particularly in
cases where difficulties are occurring in the management of
students' learning, behavioural or emotional problems. They
may consult with other agencies, accepting and passing on
referrals where necessary.
Guidance officers may specialise as a
School Psychologist who may develop psychological
techniques to foster the development and skills of individuals
and groups in educational settings. They may also undertake
educational and psychological assessments and diagnosis of
students.
