Illustrator
Illustrators create drawings and designs for books, film,
television and multimedia.
Illustrators work with a range of media including print,
celluloid, two-dimensional and three-dimensional models to
create animated images which are recorded on film.
Illustrators often use computers to produce the required
image.
An illustrator may perform the following tasks:
- produce drawings and cartoons for a client
- produce characters and images in a succession of related
positions to create an illusion of movement using hand
drawing and computer techniques
- create models out of clay and other materials
- create physical characteristics and personalities for
their characters
- manipulate visual images or models while recording onto
film, video or hard disc.
The work requires precision and drawings have to be re-done
if they do not meet the standard required. When a particular
deadline has to be met, illustrators may have to work long
hours.
Some illustrators work on a freelance basis creating their
own characters and stories to produce their own features.
Others may work in an animation studio to complete the
process. They perform tasks such as colouring the drawings or
painting the cartoon backgrounds.
Illustrators may specialise as an
Animator who draws cartoons of characters in
different positions to coincide with movement in a given
direction, synchronises lip movements with words and action
with music and sound effects.
