Laundry Worker

Laundry workers sort, check and stack articles, and load and unload washing and drying machines in laundries.

Laundry workers provide services for places such as hospitals, nursing homes, institutions, hotels, motels, restaurants and factories. Some may also provide a nappy service.

Laundry workers may perform the following tasks:

  • make sure that articles are identified with the customer's number or mark
  • barcode and record items as they arrive
  • separate articles according to colour, fabric and the cleaning treatment required, watching for damage and stains
  • load and unload washing and drying machines
  • monitor the computerised washing and drying systems in laundry machines
  • operate special pressing and ironing machines
  • fold, count, stack and package articles for delivery
  • maintain the machinery.

Laundries are warm, steamy and quite noisy workplaces, and you can expect to be on your feet most of the day.
