Nanny

Nannies are employed to care for children as employees in private households. They sometimes live with the familiy fulltime and go home on weekends perhaps.

Nannies may be required to perform the following tasks:

  • care for babies, young children by feeding, washing and dressing them, tidying up after them and by supervising their play and learning activities and also to provide a safe environment for young children.
  • organise creative play and learning activities and prepare meals and sleep times
  • communicate with parents or guardians to make sure that their preferences regarding appropriate child care is maintained and adhered to
  • A nanny will safeguard children against potential dangers, such as swimming pools, kitchen utensils, poisons and stairs
  • A nanny will take children to school, kindergarten and other activities
  • plan and prepare snacks and meals for children and perhaps the family if need be
  • care for and maintain children's belongings, tidying up bedrooms and play areas
  • take sole charge of young children for extended periods of time while parents are absent from home
  • A nanny might feed and care for pets
  • arrange and supervise outings with young children
  • may have to learn and be able to apply first aid and take appropriate action in cases of accident or emergency involving young children
  • be able to perform light housekeeping duties such as laundry or food preparation as they relate to children in their care.

Nannies employed full time may be required to live in their employers' homes. They may also be required to work in the evenings and on weekends.

Nannies may specialise as a

Governess who supervises and educates children (including school-aged children) in educational programs within private households. In most instances, these are usually situated in remote locations.
