Operations Researcher

Operations researchers develop methodologies for analysing and solving problems in government, business and industry, often using mathematical tools, statistical analysis and computers.

Operations researchers may perform the following tasks:

  • analyse complex stock management problems
  • plan and schedule production for manufacturing companies
  • perform financial modelling in areas such as banking, finance and investment
  • work out the best location for a new facility such as a warehouse, hospital, retail outlet or service centre
  • work out the best route to be taken for delivering goods to various customers or for picking up goods from various collection points
  • design telecommunication or computer networks
  • construct computer models to simulate and analyse a complex problem area such as the construction of a new runway at an airport
  • analyse queuing systems with a view to making them more efficient
  • analyse defence-related problems and assist in the development of defence strategies
  • work out the best replacement strategy for items of equipment
  • schedule staff rosters in areas such as the airline industry, medical services and sporting associations.
