Optometrist
Optometrists perform eye examinations and vision tests to
determine the presence of visual and other problems relating
to the eye, and prescribe lenses, other optical aids or
therapy.
An optometrist may perform the following tasks:
- work out the nature and extent of vision problems and
abnormalities by examining patients' eyes using a variety of
instruments, techniques and tests
- correct vision defects by prescribing and dispensing
glasses or contact lenses, special optical aids (e.g.
telescopic and microscopic devices), exercises, or changes
in working conditions (such as improved lighting)
- check glasses and contact lenses for accuracy and
comfort and advise patients on how they should be worn and
cared for
- manage minor eye conditions and in some cases prescribe
therapeutic drugs to treat eye conditions, or refer patients
to specialist medical practitioners such as
ophthalmologists, when eye diseases are detected and medical
or surgical treatment is required
- give advice on the application of visual standards and
contribute to industrial safety programs
- examine patients for manifestations of a number of eye
and systemic conditions, including glaucoma, diabetes, high
blood pressure and multiple sclerosis, referring patients to
appropriate specialist medical practitioners.
Most optometrists are in daily contact with members of the
public on a one-to-one basis.
