Piano technicians tune, maintain and repair pianos.

Piano technicians may perform the following tasks:

  • tune pianos by tightening or loosening strings to get the correct tonal balance and pitch
  • adjust moving parts to give the correct touch
  • replace worn or broken strings and carry out other minor repairs
  • test and adjust pedal action assembly and keyboard
  • carry out major repairs such as replacing wooden bridges and soundboards, re-aligning or replacing action components, replacing strings and recovering keyboards
  • assess pianos for valuation and restoration.

Piano technicians usually travel to private homes or other premises to carry out their work.
