Postal officers employed by Australia Post sort and deliver mail and parcels and undertake clerical and retail sales functions.

Parcel post officers and most mail officers and postal transport officers work in the metropolitan area. They may be required to work shifts and also on weekends. Postal services officers, postal delivery officers and postal sorting officers may work in metropolitan or country areas. Postal delivery officers are required to work in all weather conditions. All postal officers are required to wear corporate uniforms.

Postal employees may specialise as a:

Mail Officer who works at mail centres or mail exchanges, and may:

  • receive, sort and dispatch mail and parcels to mail delivery and business centres and to post offices
  • lift mail bags and operate mechanical and automatic mail processing equipment
  • maintain relevant records.

Parcel Post Officer who works at parcel centres, and may:

  • receive, sort and dispatch parcels to mail delivery and business centres and to post offices.

Postal Delivery Officer who works at delivery centres, and may:

  • sort and prepare mail for delivery
  • deliver mail
  • maintain records and redirect mail.

Postal Services Officer who works at retail outlets. They may undertake all or some of the following:

  • sales of postage stamps and money orders
  • general customer service duties
  • completion of bill payment transactions
  • agency services, such as for the Commonwealth Bank and for Telstra
  • receive and transmit fax post
  • clerical maintenance of records and statistics
  • preparation of correspondence
  • calculation of staff pay and allowances
  • mail processing duties.

Postal Sorting Officer who works in mail delivery and business centres and in post offices, and may:

  • receive and sort mail
  • operate postmarking machines and prepare mail for dispatch
  • receive, sort and dispatch parcels from and for contract delivery to business addresses
  • undertake counter and delivery duties when required
  • prepare and maintain mail processing records and documentation.

Postal Transport Officer who operates mainly in the general transport fleet, and may:

  • collect, transport and deliver mail between post offices, mail delivery and business centres, airports and rail terminals
  • clear street post boxes
  • undertake long-distance haulage of bulk mail
  • pick up and deliver articles in the metropolitan area.

Required Skills - Postal Employee

  • enjoy clerical and administrative tasks
  • must be an Australian citizen, or be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship
  • able to pass a medical examination and police clearance before employment
  • self-motivated and reliable
  • able to work as part of a team
  • postal delivery officers, postal transport officers and some postal sorting officers who drive motor vehicles are required to possess a specific class of driver's licence
