Prosthetic Orthotic Technician

Prosthetic/orthotic technicians are employed to produce, repair and maintain prostheses - artificial limbs or orthoses (braces, calipers and related appliances). They usually work under the supervision of a more senior Prosthetic/orthotic health professional.

Prosthetic/orthotic technicians may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Prosthetic/orthotic technicians will use tools, machinery, plastics, plastic molding equipment, wood and metal to make and repair prostheses and orthoses that may be damaged
  • help and assist professional prosthetists and orthotists.

Prosthetic/orthotic technicians may work in a laboratory under the guidance of, and instruction from, the professional prosthetists and orthotists. They are usually not engaged in direct client treatment rather provide assistance to those that do.
