Publisher

Publishers manage all aspects of the publishing business, including contracts, finance, sales, marketing and production of books, magazines and newspapers.

A publisher may perform the following tasks:

  • commission works for publication
  • select material for publication
  • enter into contracts with authors
  • arrange for the editing of the manuscript
  • employ additional writers and photographers if required
  • employ cover designers
  • organise the design of the finished artwork and arrange for printing
  • liaise with sales and marketing departments
  • promote the book within the industry
  • arrange for publicity (press, radio and television) for the author and book
  • sell subsidiary rights of the work
  • maintain close contact with people in the printing trades, as well as book and magazine wholesalers and retailers
  • develop and maintain the organisation's strategic plan and business plan
  • undertake clerical and administrative tasks
  • maintain an accounting system.
