Rail Transport Employee
Rail transport employees operate and maintain locomotives,
railway equipment and railway station facilities, and attend
to the needs of rail customers.
A rail transport employee may specialise as a:
Locomotive Driver who operates locomotives to convey
passengers or goods. They may perform the following tasks:
- inspect trains, reporting major defects and carrying out
necessary adjustments
- keep to timetables, making sure that safety regulations
are followed
- observe and obey signals along the track, operate
controls, monitor gauges and conform to prescribed vehicle
speeds
- stop at stations to pick up and set down passengers,
luggage and freight
- shunt rolling stock in marshalling yards and sidings
along the line
- operate points when shunting
- refuel locomotives, check oil, water and sand and top up
as necessary.
Railway Guard who is responsible for the safety of
the train and the passengers being conveyed. They may
undertake the following tasks:
- patrol the carriages to make sure there is no bad
behaviour
- make announcements when approaching stations and warn
passengers that doors are closing
- make sure automatic doors are closed, signals are
cleared for the passage of the train and the train departs
on time
- drive the train to the nearest station during an
emergency when the driver is incapacitated and protect the
railway line during an unscheduled stop to prevent an
accident
- maintain safety standards.
Railway Signaller who operates signal equipment to
control the running of trains. They may perform the following
tasks:
- make sure that passenger and freight trains travel
safely and efficiently
- provide protection for employees working on or around a
defined area
- keep an eye on trains in their area of responsibility,
recording the train number and time of every train that goes
past the signal box
- notify the control centre in cases of delays or
accident.
Railway Station Assistant who operates and maintains
railway station facilities where they may:
- assist station managers
- make public announcements and update platform displays
showing times and destinations of trains
- sell, collect and check tickets from passengers and
download information from electronic ticketing systems
- answer enquiries from the public and provide information
such as train arrival and departure times
- attend to the arrival, departure, loading and unloading
of trains and assist in crew change-overs
- help to shunt single cars and trucks in railway
marshalling yards.
Railway Track Worker who lays new railway tracks and
repairs and maintains tracks and their surrounds used for
railway lines, transfer yards, mines and quarries. They may
perform the following tasks:
- place sleepers across roadbeds and position and fasten
rails on sleepers
- cut rails to length and grind worn or rough rail ends
- drill bolt holes and bolt and weld rail sections
- spread and pack ballast to provide firm foundation for
sleepers
- remove and replace worn or damaged rails, sleepers and
switches
- control vegetation on railway reserves.
All rail transport employees may have to work irregular
continuous shifts and may have to work on weekends and public
holidays. Some work may be physically demanding, such as
standing for long periods while collecting and checking
tickets, or repairing tracks.
Rail transport employees may be required to work in remote
locations. Locomotive drivers may have to stay away overnight.
Railway track workers work in all kinds of weather and may be
required to move to where tracks need repair and, when doing
so, they often live in camps. Where required, rail transport
employees are supplied with uniforms.
