Usher

Ushers check tickets and assist people to find seats in cinemas, theatres, entertainment centres and at outdoor sporting and entertainment events.

An usher may perform the following tasks:

  • check tickets and lead or direct patrons to seats
  • answer queries, advise people on availability of seats, the length and starting time of the show or performance, and the location of facilities such as toilets and candy bars
  • give passes to patrons at interval
  • assist in finding lost property
  • sell programs or change advertising and display posters
  • manage queues, control crowds and check on the audience's behaviour during performances
  • manage complaints
  • assist in candy bars
  • assist with ticket sales
  • assist with security
  • assist with light cleaning duties
  • check that the theatre is clean and that no personal belongings have been left at the end of each performance.

Ushers are often required to do shift work, including evenings and weekends. Many employers prefer a minimum age of 18, as shiftwork can involve working late.

Many are employed on a part-time or casual basis. Ushers are required to stand for long periods. Ushers may also be required to take on a number of associated cinema tasks such as ticket box sales, cash handling for games and projection work.
