Wood carvers carve ornamental designs and patterns in wood
for furniture, panelling and other decorative purposes, using
hand tools and woodworking machines.
Wood carvers may perform the following tasks:
- prepare detailed drawings of designs and trace them onto
wood using templates and other copying devices
- select and mark out suitable timber and form rough
shapes using fretsaws, bandsaws, grinders, routers and belt
sanders
- clamp wood into jigs and carve by hand using gouges,
paring knives, chisels with mallets, or power tools
- sand the wood smooth with fine sandpaper or leave it
rough to emphasise certain features
- sharpen tools and keep them free from rust
- use special paints, dyes and wood stain to highlight
carvings
- restore and copy antique ornaments and furniture.
