Wood Turner

Wood turners operate wood-turning lathes and use chisels to shape wood as it rotates.

The components made include furniture (e.g. chair and table legs, spindles, pedestals and bed posts), building components (e.g. veranda posts, balusters and flag poles), and round items such as bowls, boat hooks and wooden plugs.

Wood turners may perform the following tasks:

  • study drawings or work orders to work out the requirements of the job
  • position and secure wood in lathes, adjusting turning speeds to the size of the work
  • position and clamp tool rests, and start the machines
  • place gauge chisels on tool rests in contact with the wood and cut the square wood into rough cylinders
  • lay out cutting lines according to drawings and place chisels against rotating work pieces to cut shapes
  • check work to ensure accuracy by using measuring instruments such as calipers or dividers
  • smooth surfaces by holding sandpaper against rotating work pieces
  • apply wax or other finishes to work pieces.

Wood turners are required to stand for long periods and may work in noisy conditions.
